Kitagwenda District ushered in a new chapter of leadership after newly elected district councillors officially took oath and elected a new district speaker during a highly competitive session held at the district headquarters.
Polly Katuramu, the councillor representing Buhanda Sub County, was duly elected as the new Speaker of Kitagwenda District following a closely contested race against Moses Mushabe, the workers’ representative and outgoing deputy speaker.
Katuramu secured 17 votes, narrowly defeating Mushabe, who garnered 16 votes in an election conducted immediately after the swearing-in ceremony of the district councillors.
Speaking shortly after being declared winner, Katuramu pledged to promote unity and cooperation between the political and technical wings of the district to improve service delivery.
“I will work hard to bridge the gap between the technical staff and political leaders so that our people can receive better services,” Katuramu said.
He also challenged councillors to maintain integrity and act as role models in their respective communities.
“We must be exemplary leaders in the communities we represent. Good conduct and responsible leadership will earn us respect both during our term of office and even after leaving leadership,” he added.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of a new political term in Kitagwenda District, with leaders expressing optimism about improved governance, accountability and development.
The newly sworn-in councillors are expected to begin deliberations on key district priorities, including service delivery, infrastructure development, education, health services and fighting corruption.
