The male councillor representing Kikyenye Sub-county, Bright Mukundane, has conceded defeat following the recently concluded election for the position of the Ibanda district speaker, urging fellow councillors to work together for the development of the district and improved service delivery.

Mukundane contested against Godwin Muhumuza Oulanya, the councillor representing Bufunda Division, in a highly contested race for the district speaker seat. However, Oulanya emerged victorious after securing 25 votes against Mukundane’s 10 votes during the election held at the district headquarters.

Speaking to Nile Post, Mukundane accepted the outcome and congratulated the speaker-elect, saying the democratic process had prevailed and that the focus should now shift towards serving the people.

“Although I lost the election, I fully respect the decision made by the councillors. Leadership is about service, and I am ready to work together with the speaker-elect and fellow leaders for the common goal of developing our district,” Mukundane said.

He emphasised the need for unity among district leaders, noting that political competition should not divide councillors after elections. Mukundane urged all elected leaders to prioritise service delivery and address the pressing needs of residents across the district.

“We campaigned differently, but now the elections are over. What matters most is ensuring that our people receive better services, improved infrastructure and effective representation,” he added.

Mukundane further called upon councillors to support decisions and programmes that promote social and economic transformation within the district, saying cooperation among leaders will be key to strengthening governance and ensuring progress during the new council term.

Meanwhile, Godwin Muhumuza Oulanya is expected to officially assume his duties as district speaker, where he will preside over council sittings and guide deliberations aimed at improving governance and service delivery in the district.
