At least 30 newly elected local government leaders in Adjumani District have been sworn into office, with the new district leadership pledging to strengthen service delivery, promote unity, and address challenges affecting both host communities and refugees in the region.
The leaders, including Adjumani District LC5 Chairperson John Anyanzo Ambayo, took oath during a ceremony held at the Adjumani District Council Hall in Aulogo II at the district headquarters.
The event brought together leaders from across the Ma’di Sub-region who committed themselves to regional cooperation and development.
Presiding over the ceremony, Chief Magistrate His Worship Ojok Tonny Obonyo urged the newly elected officials to serve residents diligently and uphold accountability throughout their term in office.
He emphasized that responsible leadership remains critical in improving public services across the district.
In his inaugural remarks, Ambayo pledged to prioritise better service delivery in key sectors such as health, education, environmental protection, and infrastructure development.
“We will ensure better service delivery across all sectors for the benefit of our people,” he said.
The LC5 chairperson also pledged to foster unity within Adjumani and across the wider Ma’di Sub-region, noting that collaboration among leaders and development partners would be essential in addressing local challenges.
He particularly highlighted the district’s refugee burden, noting that Adjumani hosts more than 230,000 refugees across 19 settlements, which continues to place pressure on social services and infrastructure.
Ambayo assured residents that services under his administration would be distributed “timely, equitably and without segregation to all people.”
Moyo District LC5 Chairperson Jimmy Vukoni Okudi called on leaders to work together in implementing the promises made during the election campaigns.
“We will fight ignorance, poverty, preventable disease, and corruption,” Okudi said, while pledging programs aimed at improving household incomes and breaking the cycle of poverty in Moyo District.
Obongi District LC5 Chairperson Hajji Abibu Buga Khemis also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation among leaders from Adjumani, Moyo, and Obongi districts.
He encouraged residents to embrace government poverty alleviation initiatives including the Parish Development Model (PDM), GROW, and Emyooga, saying the programs are vital in improving livelihoods and boosting household incomes.
Meanwhile, Moyo West County MP Tom Aleru Aza reaffirmed Parliament’s support for local governments, noting that Members of Parliament serve as ex-officio members on district councils.
“I will present the development agenda of Ma’di Sub-region to Parliament for government attention and support,” he said.
The ceremony concluded with renewed commitments from leaders to promote unity, accountability, and improved service delivery across the Ma’di Sub-region.
