The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Lino Anguzu, has been elected President of the Eastern Africa Association of Prosecutors (EAAP), following a vote held during the association’s 11th Annual General Meeting and Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The meeting, held from May 4 to May 5, 2026, brought together heads of prosecution authorities from across the region, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Sudan, and Seychelles.
The election was formally confirmed in a statement issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions through spokesperson Jacquelyn Okuli.
The conference was held under the theme “Leveraging technology in combating wildlife and transnational organised crime,” with discussions centred on strengthening regional cooperation against increasingly complex criminal networks.
Under the new leadership structure, Renson M. Ingonga was elected Secretary General, while Angelique Habyarimana and Firmin Mvonde Mambu will serve as Vice Presidents.
Sylvester Mwakitalu was elected Treasurer, while America Letela takes on the role of General Counsel. Gilbert A. Phiri joins as an Executive Committee member. Zanzibar was also admitted as a new member of the association.
In his acceptance remarks, Anguzu thanked the outgoing leadership for strengthening the institution and pledged to deepen regional cooperation in prosecution services.
He emphasised the need for continued collaboration among member states in tackling cross-border crime, particularly in areas involving technology-driven criminal activity.
Anguzu was appointed Uganda’s DPP in 2025 after serving as Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions. He previously headed the International Crimes Department, where he coordinated complex prosecutions and investigations involving law enforcement agencies.
His earlier roles include serving as Senior State Attorney, Resident State Attorney in Mbale and Arua, and Legal Officer with FIDA Uganda between 2003 and 2004.
He holds academic qualifications in law and public administration, including a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University and a Master’s degree in Public Infrastructure Management.
The election positions Uganda at the centre of regional prosecutorial leadership at a time when East Africa is increasingly focused on coordinated responses to organised crime and emerging cross-border threats.
