The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged citizens, especially the youth, to embrace discipline, hard work and cultural values as the kingdom rolls out a new development agenda aimed at improving livelihoods.
Delivering the State of Buganda Address during a sitting of the Lukiiko at Bulange, Mengo, officially opened by the Speaker, Mayiga emphasised that the time for complacency is over.
“This is not the time for endless celebrations,” Mayiga said. “It is time for our people to focus on productive work without expecting quick rewards.”
The Katikkiro used the address to unveil the “Situla Omutindo” initiative, a strategic programme designed to uplift Buganda’s citizens economically.
The initiative focuses on key sectors including agriculture, health, education, family welfare and trade as pillars for sustainable development.
“Our journey to rebuild Buganda’s strength lies in these sectors,” he noted. “We must empower households and communities if we are to restore Buganda to its rightful position.”
Mayiga also called on young people to take a leading role in this transformation by maintaining discipline and preserving cultural norms.
He stressed that values and responsibility are essential for meaningful progress.
In his remarks, the Katikkiro reassured the kingdom that its cultural heritage remains secure, confirming that the royal drums—symbols of Buganda’s identity—are well protected and continue to gain recognition beyond Uganda.
The State of Buganda Address set a clear tone for a shift toward practical development, with leaders urging citizens to actively participate in initiatives that improve incomes and strengthen communities.
As Buganda embarks on the Situla Omutindo programme, the kingdom’s leadership remains optimistic that collective effort will drive lasting social and economic transformation.
