The Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, has applauded journalists for their role in promoting development through responsible reporting, while condemning security operatives who harass members of the media, especially during politically charged periods.
He made the remarks at St Joseph’s Catholic Parish, Lweza, during celebrations to mark 54 years since the parish was founded.
The Mass attracted several dignitaries including Charles Peter Mayiga and his wife Margaret Mayiga, educationist Lawrence Mulindwa and his wife, among other leaders from Buganda Kingdom and various institutions.
Archbishop Ssemogerere first commissioned a new priests’ residence before leading the thanksgiving Mass.
While preaching, he commended the founders of the parish for laying a strong foundation that continues to bear fruit.
“We thank those who started this parish for the commendable work that has produced visible fruits,” Archbishop Ssemogerere said.
He also urged Christians to embrace development programs aimed at fighting poverty and improving livelihoods.
“Christians should actively participate in all development programs so that they can overcome poverty,” he noted.
The Archbishop further criticised laws he described as oppressive and cautioned leaders against pushing legislation that does not serve the common good, specifically referring to the Sovereignty Bill.
On World Press Freedom Day commemorations, Archbishop Ssemogerere congratulated journalists and condemned acts of violence and intimidation directed at them.
“Journalists play a big role in society, and those who harass them should stop,” he emphasised.
The parish priest, Emmanuel Ssewanyana, thanked believers and well-wishers who contributed towards the successful celebrations.
Meanwhile, Lawrence Mulindwa praised Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ssewanyana for spearheading development projects at the parish and encouraged Christians to support church construction initiatives.
“We should support the construction of God’s temple just like our predecessors did,” Mulindwa said before contributing Shs30 million towards church construction.
Speaking at the same event, Charles Peter Mayiga congratulated the parish upon its 54th anniversary and urged Christians to work harder to improve their household incomes and standards of living.
He also promoted the Buganda Kingdom’s “Situla Omutindo” initiative, saying poor leadership and shoddy work habits continue to undermine Uganda’s progress.
The celebrations also featured the holy matrimony of Joseph Ssentongo and Joan Nasakka.
