The Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) USA Chapter, Ronnie Kananura, has arrived in Kampala ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of President Museveni, scheduled for May 12, 2026.
Kananura was received by PLU officials and a section of party supporters, marking what officials described as a renewed push to strengthen engagement between the Ugandan diaspora and the government.
His visit comes at a time when the Patriotic League of Uganda is seeking to reposition its international chapters as key contributors to national development, beyond traditional remittance support.
Speaking shortly after his arrival, Kananura said his presence at the inauguration—set to take place at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds—signals the diaspora’s growing interest in participating more actively in Uganda’s governance and development agenda.
“The diaspora is often referred to as Uganda’s ‘eleventh region’. Our presence here reflects a commitment to national unity and a readiness to strengthen coordination between Ugandans abroad and the government,” he said.
Kananura noted that a more organised diaspora could play a significant role in contributing skills, investment, and global networks to support Uganda’s long-term development plans, including Uganda Vision 2040.
He added that the PLU USA chapter will use the visit to advocate for policies that protect diaspora investments and streamline processes such as dual citizenship, which many Ugandans abroad consider critical to their continued engagement with the country.
According to PLU officials, the delegation’s participation in the inauguration represents a shift toward structured civic and economic partnership, with a focus on sectors such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Government officials welcomed the delegation, noting that diaspora engagement remains important for investment, international relations, and knowledge transfer.
During his stay, Kananura is expected to hold a series of consultative meetings with government officials and other stakeholders. Discussions are expected to include proposals for establishing a formal diaspora-government liaison office to improve coordination and service delivery.
As preparations for the swearing-in ceremony gather pace, PLU USA leaders say their message is clear: the diaspora is positioning itself not only as a source of financial support, but as an active partner in Uganda’s development.
