Mayiga also urged fishermen to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and practicing safe sex.

“Short-lived pleasure should not expose people to HIV/AIDS. Fishermen should use protection and live responsibly,” he added.

The Chairperson of Kasensero Landing Site, Prince Joseph Ssuuna Kateregga, said the killings of Ugandan fishermen and theft of boats and engines had greatly affected livelihoods in the area.

“Every year, more than 100 boat engines are stolen and smuggled into Tanzania, which has pushed many people backwards economically,” Kateregga said.

Meanwhile, Buddu County Chief Jude Muleke praised Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for promoting development and strengthening cooperative initiatives among communities.

In a related development, Bbaale Mugera said competition among PEWOSA groups in Buddu had boosted development, with residents increasingly embracing savings and investment programs.

Mayiga was accompanied on the tour by several Buganda Kingdom officials, including Noah Kiyimba, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, Ben Ssekamatte, and Alfred Batuusa, among others.
