The Virunga Gorilla Marathon is set to return for its third edition on May 30, 2026, in Kisoro, with organizers targeting 3,000 runners.
The event was officially launched on Friday at Golden Tulip Canaan Kampala, bringing together key stakeholders, including government officials and sponsors. The launch also featured the unveiling of the official marathon kit.
Tusker Lite, a well-established supporter of Uganda’s running community, has reaffirmed its partnership with the marathon and will headline the post-race festivities with a vibrant Neon Rave experience.
Event organizer Kenneth Kamukama said this year’s edition aims to significantly grow participation.
“Last year, the marathon attracted 1,000 participants. This year, we are targeting 3,000 runners from across East Africa and beyond. Our goal is to grow the marathon into one of the region’s leading experiential events while deepening its impact on conservation, tourism, and community development,” he said.
The State Minister for Tourism, Martin Mugarra, praised the marathon for its contribution to both tourism and talent development, as well as its focus on environmental awareness under the theme Running for Climate Action.
“I’m encouraged to see this marathon growing, as many events do not last long. I hope it continues to expand and improve in the coming years,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to supporting initiatives that combine sport with conservation.
Race Director John Tibita revealed that the event will feature multiple race categories, including the full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10km, and 6km races.
In a new addition, this year’s marathon will introduce a 112-kilometre ultra run, marking the event’s entry into trail running. This category will take participants off paved roads and onto natural terrain, including steep climbs and rugged paths that test endurance and adaptability.
“Runners will pass through rainforest, rolling hills, and ancient lava fields, while also experiencing the warmth of local communities, including the Batwa. It is a demanding but unforgettable challenge for those ready to push beyond the traditional marathon distance,” Tibita said.
Speaking on behalf of Tusker Lite, Brand Representative Roy Ronald Tumwizire expressed enthusiasm about the marathon’s growth and continued impact.
“For Tusker Lite, marathons are a natural fit. As a low-carb beer that champions active lifestyles, we are proud to support such events,” he said.
He added that the brand aims to promote active, social, and fulfilling lifestyles.
“We want to fuel experiences that celebrate individuality, progressiveness, and vibrant social energy. Tusker Lite celebrates people who live boldly, pursue their passions, and enjoy life responsibly,” Tumwizire noted.
On the anticipated Neon Rave experience, he said participants can expect live performances, premium refreshments, and a high-energy celebration atmosphere.
Registration for the marathon is currently open, with fees set at Shs 70,000 for East African citizens and $30 for international participants.
