MTN Uganda has launched a Spark Hub at Kabale University, marking the rollout of its first regional innovation and digital literacy centre under Phase Two of the MTN ACE Tech programme, aimed at expanding access to technology skills and innovation opportunities in the Kigezi sub-region.
The hub is expected to serve both students and surrounding communities by providing access to modern computing facilities, digital training, and innovation support intended to enhance learning, entrepreneurship, and employability.
The Kabale-based facility is the first of four regional hubs planned under the second phase of the programme.
It was constructed and delivered by Centre-Tech in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, with a focus on expanding community access to digital infrastructure.
Professor William Bazeyo, a member of the MTN Uganda Board of Trustees, said the telecom company has invested more than four billion shillings over the past three years to support innovation centres across the country.
“MTN aims to reach at least 20,000 young people and community members through these initiatives,” Prof. Bazeyo noted.
Kabale University Vice Chancellor, Professor Joy Constance Kwesiga, said the hub will play a key role in promoting entrepreneurship, supporting business start-ups, and strengthening digital skills development and financial inclusion among users.
While officiating the launch, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, reaffirmed government support for such initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide.
“As government we hope that if the hub is properly utilised, it will significantly boost innovation in the region,” Zawedde said.
The Spark Hub is expected to provide shared digital infrastructure that enhances access to technology for both university students and the wider Kigezi community, contributing to reduced digital inequality and improved innovation capacity.
