Uganda fined Shs18m by FIFA over fans' sitting arrangement at Namboole

The Uganda vs Togo preliminary qualifier for the 2018 World Cup could go down in history as arguably the most attended fixture by local fans.

The match that took place on November 15, 2015 fetched all manner of Cranes’ fans that the stadium filled from every section; emergency exits, stairways.

Now the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has fined several countries including Uganda for disciplinary cases during qualifying ties for the 2018 World Cup.

In a communication sent by Fifa on November 7th, Uganda has been fined 5000 Swiss Francs (Shs18,031,554) because a group of supporters sat in an improper place (emergency exits and stairway) during the Uganda vs Togo fixture at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Besides the fine, Uganda has also been warned that they should always abide by the regulations.

Egypt who have already qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup were also fined 20,000 Swiss Francs (Shs72, 842, 435) for improper conduct among spectators when they were signing homophobic chants when Egypt hosted Congo Brazzaville in 2017.

The other African countries that were fined and warned for different issues include; Mozambique, Morocco and Zambia.

Fifa made it clear that their disciplinary committee takes decisions based on the specific circumstances of each case. Although they made it clear that some decisions may be subject to appeal.
