Kabale Municipality Traders Seek More Time Ahead of Eviction Drive

Traders in Kabale Municipality have expressed concern over an upcoming eviction from streets and other unauthorized trading areas, saying they have not been given enough time or adequate alternatives to relocate their businesses.

As the enforcement deadline approaches, many vendors—particularly timber dealers and carpenters from Mwanjari—say they remain uncertain about their future. They argue that the time given is too short to identify suitable new locations, leaving them in a difficult situation.

One of the affected traders, Ivan Namaara, said the directive was issued suddenly without adequate preparation, making it difficult for traders to adjust. Other residents echoed similar concerns, noting that the eviction appears set to proceed without clear relocation arrangements.

Abel Mwebembezi also raised concerns about poor communication from authorities, particularly regarding where traders are expected to relocate.

“We are appealing to Kabale Municipal authorities to extend the eviction deadline and give us more time to adjust. We are also asking the government to provide a designated area where we can continue operating,” traders said.

Josephant Byaruhanga urged leaders to provide clearer guidance and practical support to ensure a smooth transition.

There are also fears about the economic impact of the eviction. Gerald Turinawe noted that many traders have loans tied to their businesses and could struggle to repay them if displaced without alternative arrangements.

“Many of us depend on these businesses for our livelihoods and could lose our jobs,” traders added.

In response, Kabale Municipality Deputy Town Clerk Eric Sunday said land has already been secured in Bugongi Kakabano for the relocation of traders.

“Construction of suitable facilities will follow to accommodate the traders,” Sunday said.

Municipal authorities insist the eviction aims to improve sanitation, reduce congestion, and restore order in the town. The exercise is part of a broader national effort to ensure traders operate within designated and regulated areas.
