The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on married couples to value and nurture the small acts that bring joy and strengthen relationships within their homes.
Speaking at a wedding ceremony held at St Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, where Dr. Lean Godwin Mutaawe was united in holy matrimony with Brendah Nabakka, Mayiga emphasized that happiness in marriage originates from the heart and is sustained through intentional actions.
Mayiga said joy in marriage is cultivated through qualities such as appreciation, generosity, communication, forgiveness, and commitment. According to him, when happiness is present, couples are more likely to enjoy and sustain their union.
He likened love and happiness to human health, explaining that just as the body requires nourishment and regular medical check-ups—even when one feels well—marriages also need consistent care and attention.
He cautioned couples against waiting for problems to arise before taking steps to restore happiness, urging them instead to act proactively.
“If you notice something that brings joy to your spouse, embrace it and build upon it,” he said, adding that happiness must be intentionally nurtured.
Mayiga also encouraged couples to raise children while instilling cultural values, particularly the importance of preserving their heritage and language, Luganda.
The main celebrant, Rev. Henry James Lukyamuzi, challenged young people who fear the responsibilities of marriage, urging them to step forward with courage and faith.
“One who does not take responsibility within the family cannot effectively lead elsewhere,” he said.
Rev. Lukyamuzi also advised the groom, Godwin Mutaawe, to cherish and care for his wife, emphasizing humility, patience, and mutual respect as essential pillars of marriage.
Godwin Mutaawe is the son of Geoffrey Mutaawe Bisatuuka, a close associate of the Katikkiro and a member of Club Maruum.
