Mukono Bishop Calls for Reflection After Deadly Kampala Daycare Attack

The Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt. Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo, has called on residents to reflect deeply on their faith, seek reconciliation, and refrain from harming others, following a tragic attack at a daycare centre in Kampala that claimed the lives of four young children.

Speaking during the ecumenical Way of the Cross procession through Mukono Town on Friday, Bishop Kagodo emphasized the importance of living out Christian values beyond profession of faith, urging believers to “reflect on the day’s meaning, seek reconciliation, and avoid harming others while professing faith.”

Bishop Kagodo’s remarks come in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday at Ggaba Early Childhood Day Care Centre in Makindye Division, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the suspect—identified as Christopher Okello Anyu—gained access to the school by posing as a parent seeking to enrol a child. He reportedly inquired about the school’s fee structure, was given a circular, and asked to return later.

After leaving the administration office, the suspect entered a classroom with 14 pupils and carried out the attack, fatally injuring four children. The victims have been identified as Ryan Odeke (1 and a half years), Gideon Eteko (2 and a half years), Keisha Elungat (2 years), and Ignatius Sseruyange (2 years).

Bishop Kagoda further reassured families whose businesses have been disrupted by the trade order, affirming that “the Christ we serve is more than able to make things work for all.”

The procession, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, began at St. Philip & Andrew’s Cathedral and concluded at Bishop’s Senior.

Along the route, prayers and reflections were held at several key locations, including Pension House, Church of Uganda Hospital, Mukono General Hospital, Mukono Municipality, the Police Station, Centenary Bank, Mukono Central Division offices, Mituba IV headquarters, the District Headquarters building, Kawuga Prison, and St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church in Bugujju.

At Kawuga Prison, Cathedral Provost, The Very Rev. Canon Godfrey Ssengendo, encouraged inmates to embrace repentance, forgiveness, and faith, reminding them that they are not beyond redemption. He also extended prayers to patients at Church of Uganda Hospital, assuring them of God’s healing presence.

Cathedral Vicar Rev. Daniel Bbalabyekkubo prayed for schools and businesses, urging students to remain focused on Christ amid challenges.

From the Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Vianne Kyeyume of St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church prayed for strength for staff at Mukono General Hospital and called for continued prayers for both the sick and caregivers, referencing John 10:10.

Rev. Fr. Bonny Ssekanjako cautioned against actions that could lead to imprisonment and urged civic leaders at municipal, district, and division levels to serve responsibly, recognizing their roles as stewards entrusted by God.

In a gesture of Easter compassion, the faithful donated essential items including sugar, rice, soap, salt, soda, water, flour, sanitary pads, and Shs 1.5 million to support prisoners.
