The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has urged believers to reflect deeply on the true meaning of Good Friday, emphasizing sacrifice, repentance, and the renewal of faith.
Speaking at All Saints Church in Rukungiri, within Rujumbura Archdeaconry, Bishop Asiimwe noted that Good Friday remains one of the most significant moments in the Christian faith, commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross for the redemption of humanity.
Prior to the service, Bishop Asiimwe joined thousands of Christians in the Way of the Cross procession through the streets of Rukungiri town.
Citing John 19:30, Bishop Asiimwe described Christ’s sacrifice as the ultimate expression of God’s love, emphasizing that “the price was paid in full,” as Jesus proclaimed from the cross, “It is finished.” Bishop Asiimwe reassured the faithful that their hope is anchored in Christ, who conquered death and rose on the third day.
“While the devil may have laughed when Jesus died, Jesus had the last laugh because He resurrected,” he said.
Bishop Asiimwe encouraged Christians to dedicate their lives to following Christ’s example, especially in overcoming temptation and enduring life’s challenges with faith.
According to him, the essence of Good Friday lies not only in remembrance but in transformation—calling believers to embody humility, sacrifice, and obedience in their daily lives.
Bishop Asiimwe further urged Christians to mark the occasion through acts of kindness, reconciliation, and service to others, highlighting that such actions reflect the true spirit of Christ’s sacrifice.
He stressed that faith, determination, and hard work are essential in transforming lives, drawing parallels with Jesus Christ, who embraced a humble life despite His divine power.
Bishop Asiimwe also highlighted the importance of resilience in the face of economic hardship, challenging what he described as a “poverty mindset” among some Africans and urging believers to reject the notion that poverty is inevitable.
In a special appeal, Bishop Asiimwe called for justice for four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, currently detained at Luzira Prison over treason charges, asking for God’s intervention so that truth and justice prevail in the trial of Besigye and all other political prisoners.
