Leaders, Security Agencies Urged to Safeguard Peace as Christians Mark Way of the Cross

Religious leaders have called on government and security agencies to remain vigilant and prevent any acts that could disrupt national stability, as hundreds of Christians took part in the Way of the Cross procession.

The call was made by Kiziba Parish Archdeacon Kenneth Muwanga, who led the faithful during the Good Friday procession held at St. Paul Orthodox Church in Bumbu, Kikyusa Parish, Bamunanika County.

“Leaders and security organs must work together to stop anything that can cause unrest in the country. This is the only way we can preserve peace,” Mugwanga said.

The procession attracted hundreds of believers from different Christian denominations, including Orthodox, Catholic, and Anglican churches, reflecting unity among the faithful during the Easter season.

Muwanga noted that participation in the Way of the Cross has grown significantly over the years, with more people embracing the spiritual practice.

He urged leaders to address the root causes of instability to ensure lasting peace.

“The number of people joining this procession continues to increase every year. This shows how important it is, but also reminds us of our responsibility to maintain harmony in society,” he added.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the organizing committee, Rev. Fr. Robert Kirinya of St. Paul Orthodox Church, called for compassion and reconciliation, particularly regarding individuals detained on political grounds.

“As we approach the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we appeal to those in authority to consider releasing those arrested during political tensions, as a sign of forgiveness and unity,” Kirinya said.

In a related development, Bamunanika Member of Parliament Robert Ssekitoleko used the gathering to condemn the growing cases of land grabbing in the area.

“Land grabbing has become a serious problem in our constituency. It is causing conflict and injustice among residents, and it must be addressed urgently,” Ssekitoleko said.

The Way of the Cross, an annual Christian tradition commemorating the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, is widely observed country wide during the Easter season.
