A fire outbreak has destroyed a boys’ dormitory at Child Care Nursery and Primary School in Kabale District, leaving property worth millions of shillings damaged.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on March 30, 2026, at around 9:00pm in Karukuba Cell, Ntarabana Parish, Buhara Sub-county.
The fire was reported by the school director, Innocent Mbeinenamukama, who alerted authorities through a telephone call.
“The police fire brigade swiftly responded to the scene using fire tender registration number UP 4719, led by Moses Muhanguzi and driven by Andrew Bikorwomuhangi,” Maate said.
Upon arrival, the fire had already engulfed one of the rooms on the third floor, which was being used as a boys’ dormitory. The brigade managed to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the school and nearby areas.
Although no lives were lost, the blaze caused significant damage to the structure and destroyed property including beds, mattresses, books, and clothing. The total loss is estimated at about Shs30 million.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit.
“The scene was attended by the school director, head teacher Merecerina Ahisibwe, teachers, and local residents as investigations into the exact cause continue,” Maate added.
Authorities have since urged school administrators and the public to ensure proper electrical installations and conduct regular inspections to prevent similar incidents.
