The Commander Air Force, Charles Okidi, has emphasized the need for operational excellence and strong leadership among military officers, noting that modern warfare demands resilience, sound judgment, and effective command.
Lt Gen Okidi made the remarks while representing the Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, at the pass-out ceremony of 76 officers who completed the Squadron Officers Course at the Air Force College in Nakasongola.
He explained that the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Air Force College course is designed to transform officers from tactical executors into operational leaders, while sharpening their mental resilience, strategic thinking, and command ability required in complex environments.
“Over the past months, you have been challenged to rise above pressure, make critical decisions, and work as a team. Having navigated this demanding curriculum, you have proven that you are ready to shoulder the responsibility of command,” he said.
Lt Gen Okidi noted that squadron-level officers play a central role in maintaining the Air Force’s operational readiness, urging them to ensure the force remains prepared to respond effectively whenever called upon.
Earlier, he commissioned new dormitories at the college, describing the development as a reflection of the Air Force’s commitment to improving the welfare and learning environment of both students and staff.
In his remarks, the Commandant of the Air Force College, Allan Kalanzi, urged the graduates to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in their future assignments.
He emphasized that leadership begins with discipline and action, calling on the officers to lead by example in the execution of their duties.
Brig Gen Kalanzi described the squadron as the backbone of the Air Force and stressed the importance of continuous and transformative training in preparing the force to meet evolving security challenges.
He further encouraged the officers to view the course as a key milestone in their professional growth, noting that career development in the military is an ongoing process.
The ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Under-Secretary Finance and Administration Edith Buturo, Under-Secretary Logistics Francis Kahirita Ngabirano, Deputy Commander Land Force Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, Deputy Commander Air Force Maj Gen David Isimbwa, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Maj Gen Richard Otto, and Joint Staff Human Resource Management Maj Gen James Kinalwa, among other senior and junior officers.
