The spirit of culture and creativity was on full display at the Cultural Gala 2026 held at Buganda Royal Institute of Business and Technical Education in Mengo, where students showcased their talents and celebrated their heritage under the theme “Technology in Promoting and Preserving Culture and Traditions Among Youth.”

The vibrant event brought together students from different houses—Muteesa, Chwa, Mwanga, and Mutebi—who competed in a variety of cultural performances including traditional dances, music, and drama. The gala highlighted not only artistic talent but also the importance of preserving cultural identity in a rapidly evolving technological world.

The Cheif Guest, who is also the Chairperson of the Council of Clan Heads, Omutaka Namwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba, emphasized the need for young people to take pride in their cultural roots. He cautioned students against being discouraged by external narratives that undermine African traditions.

“No one should convince you that your culture is inferior. We must all strive to protect and promote what defines us. While it is acceptable to refine and modernize aspects of our culture, we must preserve its core values and identity,” he said.

Omutaka Namwama also highlighted the growing role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, in advancing cultural awareness. He encouraged students to use digital tools responsibly to document, share, and celebrate their traditions with a global audience, noting that technology can help make cultural heritage more accessible and appealing.

Representing the Ministry of Education in the Buganda Kingdom, Leticia Nakimuli, speaking on behalf of Minister Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, underscored the importance of responsible technology use. She pointed out that while mobile phones have revolutionized communication, they should be used intentionally to promote positive values.

“A mobile phone is like a vehicle. It depends on how you choose to use it. Let us use our platforms to drive and promote our culture, especially the Luganda language, across social media and digital spaces,” she said.

The school’s principal, Joseph Balikuddembe Ssenkusu, stressed that education should go beyond academic knowledge. He noted that institutions have a responsibility to nurture students’ talents and cultural awareness alongside formal learning.

“We are not here to provide theoretical knowledge alone. We must also help students discover their talents and appreciate the cultural diversity of Uganda. The confidence and creativity displayed today show that our students are well-prepared for the future workforce,” he said.

The Head Prefect, Rehema Kaseenene, highlighted that the Cultural Gala is an annual event designed to nurture student talent and deepen their understanding of cultural themes. She revealed that this year’s theme was introduced through a preparatory workshop led by Prince Kayemba Kayirani, which helped students explore the intersection between technology and culture.

Student leader Policapo Kawooya commended his peers for actively participating in school programs and embracing guidance from school leadership, which contributed to the success of the event.

In the competition results, Muteesa House emerged as the overall winner, excelling across multiple categories including singing, traditional dance, and drama.

Their outstanding performance earned them the 2026 championship shield and a prize of a cow, marking a significant achievement in the school’s cultural calendar.
