NRM Dismisses NUP Rigging Claims in Nansana, Points to Court Process

Leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Nansana Municipality have dismissed allegations by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) that the recently concluded local elections were rigged, insisting the results reflected the will of voters.

The NRM officials say the electoral process was free and fair and have advised aggrieved candidates to seek legal redress instead of making public accusations.

The response follows announcements by several NUP candidates who lost in the elections that they intend to challenge the results in court, while also accusing the Nansana Resident District Commissioner, Charles Lwanga, of interfering in the electoral process.

Nansana NRM Chairperson Robert Maseruka said making allegations in the media would not change the election outcome and urged the opposition to follow legal procedures.

He argued that political parties sometimes lose elections and must reorganise rather than accuse others of rigging.

NRM leaders also attributed their strong performance in the municipality to what they described as improved service delivery and renewed voter confidence. According to party officials, the NRM won 46 out of 60 councillor seats in Nansana Municipality, a significant increase compared to previous elections where the party held only a few positions.

Musa Kalungi, a councillor representing Nansana Division, accused some opposition supporters of applying double standards by accepting results when they win and rejecting them when they lose.

He also cautioned against the use of social media to attack political opponents, urging those with complaints to seek justice through the courts.

The dispute over the election results is expected to move to court as NUP candidates prepare legal petitions, setting the stage for a political and legal contest over the Nansana election outcome.
