The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement, Richard Todwong, has arrived in South Africa alongside senior party officials ahead of planned celebrations marking President  Museveni’s victory in the 2026 general elections.

Todwong and his delegation landed in Johannesburg on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, where they immediately held a meeting with the organising committee and members of the NRM diaspora community to finalise preparations for the upcoming event.

During the engagement, Todwong delivered a message from President Museveni, expressing confidence in the outcome of the elections and urging party supporters to remain united. “There is no doubt about the President’s landslide victory. Nothing should stop members from celebrating this achievement,” he said.

He also called on party members with reservations about the election results to take part in ideological training programmes at Kyankwanzi, noting that such initiatives help deepen understanding of the party’s principles and Uganda’s development agenda.

Mr. Phillip Kakuru, a Senior Presidential Advisor on Trade and one of the organisers, said preparations for the celebrations have been completed and promised an inclusive event.

“All Ugandans are welcome to participate, regardless of political affiliation. We encourage everyone to join the SACCO so they can benefit from similar government initiatives such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model,” he said.

Kakuru added that more senior party officials are expected to attend, including Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, Tanga Odoi, and Mr. Syrian Bagamba, who will oversee the organisation of party structures within the diaspora.

The main celebrations are scheduled to take place from March 28 to 29, 2026, in Cape Town, in what party officials describe as part of broader efforts to strengthen the NRM’s presence among Ugandans living abroad.

Todwong was accompanied by several officials, including  Arinaitwe Rwakajara and Maj. (Rtd) Awich, Director of External Affairs.

The delegation was received by organisers led by Kakuru and Uganda’s Ambassador to South Africa, Paul Amoru.

A key highlight of the celebrations will be the launch of a diaspora savings and credit cooperative (SACCO), aimed at mobilising Ugandans abroad for collective investment.

Organisers say the initiative targets more than four million Ugandans in the diaspora, each expected to contribute 50 US dollars monthly.

According to the organisers, the fund could raise up to 2.5 billion dollars annually, with planned investments in sectors such as real estate, healthcare, and financial markets, as well as the possible establishment of a diaspora-owned bank.

They say the initiative is intended to harness diaspora resources to support Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
