The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has called on Ugandans to shun violence and division, warning that such behaviour undermines social cohesion and national stability.
Kaziimba made the remarks during a fundraising launch at Gayaza High School, where he officiated at an event to mobilise resources for the expansion of the school chapel.
“Ugandans must avoid acts of violence such as fighting, hatred, and division based on politics or religion. These actions destroy the hearts of our people,” he said.
The Archbishop urged individuals involved in harmful conduct to reflect and change their ways, emphasising the need for moral renewal in society.
“Those who engage in such behaviors should examine themselves and turn away from evil,” he added.
He also criticised unethical practices such as land grabbing and bank robbery, attributing them to weak moral foundations and a lack of values.
The fundraising initiative, spearheaded by alumni dating back to the 1980s, is expected to cost over Shs7 billion and is projected to be completed within 11 months.
The event began with prayers led by Kaziimba alongside Moses Banja and other religious leaders.
The headteacher, Robina Kizito Katongole, said the chapel expansion will require significant support from well-wishers and former students.
Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Buganda was represented by the Second Deputy Katikkiro, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, who praised the alumni for their commitment and encouraged continued support for the project.
“This is a noble cause that deserves the support of all who value education and faith,” he said.
More than Shs1 billion was raised at the launch, marking a significant step toward the realisation of the chapel project.
