Darren Kyeyune says AFCON Final Controversy Damaging African Football Image

Sports journalist Darren Allan Kyeyune has expressed strong concerns regarding the events surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, describing the situation as “quite disappointing from a sportsmanship perspective" and damaging to the image of African football.

Speaking to Canary Mugume during Next Big Talk, hosted by Next Radio on Friday, Kyeyune reflected on both the atmosphere during the final and the broader implications of the controversy.

“For anyone who witnessed the atmosphere during the finals, it’s quite disappointing from a sportsmanship perspective. When you add the context of Africa, it leaves us with little room to demand respect from the rest of the world,” he said.

Kyeyune’s remarks come amid a growing storm surrounding the final, which originally saw the Senegal national football team defeat the Morocco national football team 1–0 after extra time in a tense encounter held in Rabat on January 18, 2026.

The match was disrupted late in the game following a disputed penalty decision, with Senegal’s technical bench briefly halting play and some supporters attempting to invade the pitch.

“It’s hard to imagine that there were many decisions that could have gone wrong on the field,” he said, questioning the sequence of events that led to the controversy.

The situation escalated further after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Board earlier this week stripped Senegal of the AFCON title. The board declared the team had forfeited the final and awarded a 3–0 victory to Morocco, overturning the initial result.

The decision followed a complaint by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), which argued that Morocco’s right to be heard had not been respected in the initial disciplinary proceedings.

According to CAF, Senegal’s conduct was found to have violated Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations, resulting in the forfeit ruling and adjustments to disciplinary sanctions for both teams.

Kyeyune also highlighted the broader context surrounding the tournament, particularly the pressure on the host nation.

“Morocco hosted the Africa Cup of Nations under a lot of pressure. This pressure stemmed, first, from the population and, second, from the football hierarchy itself within the kingdom,” he said.

“What you see today is a culmination of Morocco’s investment in football, and the strong relationship between Morocco and CAF may provide some background to explain the events we are witnessing now.”

Kyeyune further emphasised the expectations placed on the host nation, stating, "The Kingdom of Morocco was under immense pressure to win AFCON, because the king had invested heavily.”

He also questioned the implications of such decisions on the integrity of the competition.

“If this had happened in the semi-final and Senegal had gone on to play the final, then what would it mean for the team that eventually wins the final?” he asked.

Meanwhile, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has strongly condemned the ruling, describing it as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable.”

Officials have confirmed plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, seeking to reinstate the original result and defend the interests of Senegalese football.
