The Titular Head of Muslims in Uganda, Prince Kassim Nakibinge, has called on government stakeholders to provide support and compensation to residents affected by the recent floods in Kampala.
“The recent floods in Kampala destroyed several properties and disrupted the lives of many residents. I thank all government stakeholders who came forward to promise support and compensation,” he said during Eid celebrations at his residence in Kibuli on Friday, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance to those impacted.
Ongoing heavy rains have continued to affect multiple parts of Kampala, particularly disrupting businesses and transport systems.
In one notable incident, floodwaters overflowed into shops and commercial premises near property owned by city businessman Hamis Kiggundu.
Traders in the area reported significant losses, including electronics, clothing, and other retail goods, after water entered their shops.
Several affected traders have appealed to the government for support, noting that the damage has left them struggling to recover financially.
Flood-related disruptions have been a recurring challenge in Kampala, with heavy rains frequently impacting economic activity and highlighting gaps in the city’s drainage infrastructure.
Authorities, however, insist that long-term solutions are being implemented to mitigate such incidents.
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)stated that while short-term disruptions may continue to occur during heavy rains, the city’s broader planning framework is designed to address these challenges sustainably.
