Joel Ssenyonyi

As the race for the Speakership appears settled following the Central Executive Committee’s endorsement of Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, attention is now shifting to the position of Leader of the Opposition in Uganda’s 12th Parliament.

The role, which is legally recognized as a key pillar in Parliament’s administration, is expected to attract significant interest amid growing debate over who is best suited to steer the opposition during a politically complex period.

The current Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, is widely seen as a frontrunner to retain the position. He is reportedly backed by several influential figures within the opposition.

Among them is former Leader of the Opposition Winnie Kiiza, who has praised Ssenyonyi’s performance, noting that he has delivered effectively during his tenure.

Her endorsement comes at a time when a number of senior legislators are also being considered for the role. These include John Baptist Nambeshe, Betty Nambooze, and Paul Mwiru, all of whom bring extensive parliamentary experience.

However, beyond the individuals in the race, the conversation is increasingly shifting toward the qualities required to lead the opposition in the current political climate.

Analysts and observers point to the need for strong communication skills, the ability to unify diverse political voices, and resilience in holding the government accountable.

Supporters of Ssenyonyi argue that his visibility, consistency, and connection with the public make a compelling case for continuity in leadership. On the other hand, some within political circles maintain that seniority and long-standing parliamentary experience remain critical in navigating the complexities of the House.

Ultimately, the decision on who will take up the role lies with the National Unity Platform, which is expected to maintain the majority of opposition Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament.

As the process unfolds, all eyes remain on the opposition as it prepares to choose a leader capable of shaping its direction in the years ahead.
