Church leaders in Fort Portal Diocese are moving closer to establishing a new parish in Kamwenge District, as a team of deans prepares to assess infrastructure and readiness before a final decision by the bishop.

A team of deans from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal is expected to conduct a site visit to assess the progress of the proposed Uganda Martyrs Kagunga Catholic Parish, which is planned to be carved out of Kamwenge Catholic Parish in Kamwenge District.

According to Rev Fr James Isabakaki, the parish priest of Kamwenge Catholic Parish and dean of Kamwenge Deanery, the visit will focus on verifying the development of key structures such as the priest’s residence and parish offices before recommending the establishment of the new parish.

“The team of deans will visit the proposed site to confirm the progress made on the priest’s house and office structures. Their findings will guide the recommendation on whether the parish is ready to be established,” Fr Isabakaki said.

He explained that the delegation will include deans from different deaneries within the diocese and will be led by the diocesan Pastoral Coordinator.

Fr Isabakaki added that after the inspection, the team will compile a report and submit it to the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, who has the final authority to approve the creation of a new Catholic parish.

“After the visit, a report will be prepared and submitted to the Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese, who has the mandate to grant parish status,” he noted.

He called upon Christians and church leaders in the area to continue supporting the development project to ensure the parish meets all the necessary requirements.

“Christians should double their efforts in fulfilling all the requirements needed for parish status so that the dream of having Uganda Martyrs Kagunga Parish becomes a reality,” Fr. Byamukama said.

The chief catechist of Bubukaka Zone, Barnabas Rwangirahe, said the faithful are committed to supporting the initiative until the parish is officially established.

“As Christians of Bubukaka zone, we are ready to fulfill all the requirements and continue working together until the parish is granted official status,” Rwangirahe said.

The proposed Uganda Martyrs Kagunga Catholic Parish is expected to bring church services closer to the faithful and strengthen pastoral work in the area once it is officially established.
