Two Dead, Two Injured in Early Morning Crash at Kaliro Sugar Factory Gate

Kaliro District — Two people have died and two others sustained injuries following a road traffic crash at Buyuya Trading Centre in Kaliro District on Monday morning.

Busoga North Regional Police reported that the accident occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. at the gate of the Kaliro Sugar Factory along the Kaliro–Nawaikoke Road.

The crash involved a blue Isuzu Elf (registration UBM 110F) and a white Mitsubishi Fuso (registration UAV 396C).

Preliminary investigations indicate that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction toward Kaliro Town when the Fuso slowed down to enter the sugar factory to load molasses.

The Isuzu Elf, following behind, collided with the rear molasses tank of the Fuso.

Police confirmed that Sabaidu Sudi, 50, of Bulyakubi, Bujugo Village in Bumanya Sub-county, died instantly at the scene. The driver of the Isuzu Elf, identified only as Jamili, later died while being rushed to hospital.

Two other occupants, Robert Babe, 50, of Bukumankola Muslim in Kaliro Town Council, and Kirabe Lasuli, 22, of Bulangira Zone in Kaliro Town Council, sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Fuso is currently at large, and police efforts are underway to locate him to assist with the investigation.

Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Samson Lubega urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly near junctions, factory entrances, and busy trading centres, and to maintain safe following distances to prevent avoidable accidents.

Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
