The Minister of State for Transport, Fred Byamukama, has commissioned the Kyenyonga–Kikada trial hybrid bridge amid excitement from residents and motorists over the improved connectivity.

The bridge links the villages of Kikada, Kyenyonga and Kihunumba, providing a shorter and safer route between the communities. Locals welcomed the development, noting that it will ease movement, improve access to markets and social services, and reduce travel time.

The Kyenyonga–Kikada bridge forms part of a broader national programme implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Works and Transport and Bridges to Prosperity. Over the past nine years, the collaboration has delivered 34 trailbridges across multiple regions of Uganda, particularly in mountainous districts and areas with deep river valleys in the eastern region.

Commissioning the project, Byamukama described the hybrid bridge as a practical step in government’s efforts to strengthen rural connectivity and unlock local productivity.

“This Kyenyonga–Kikada hybrid bridge is a clear demonstration of our commitment to improving rural infrastructure and supporting economic activity in hard-to-reach communities,” he said.

The project is designed to improve access for isolated rural populations living in areas characterised by challenging terrain and seasonal flooding. Officials noted that such interventions are crucial in ensuring equitable infrastructure development and preventing geographically disadvantaged communities from being left behind.

Government representatives emphasised that investing in bridges is vital for economic stability, regional trade and community access to essential services, especially as Uganda grapples with flooding and aging infrastructure in several parts of the country.

The commissioning marks another milestone in efforts to enhance safe and reliable transport networks in rural Uganda.
