Hajj Yunus Kakande, Secretary in the Office of the President, has revealed to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that he personally intervened to prevent National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Patrick Nsamba Oshabe from losing his parliamentary seat in Kassanda North during the 2026 elections.
Kakande told PAC that the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Kassanda hesitated to announce Nsamba’s victory, citing the sensitivity of Ugandan elections and referencing historical tensions from 1981.
His intervention ensured that Nsamba’s win, by a razor-thin margin of 116 votes—12,274 to 12,158—was officially declared, securing the NUP legislator’s place in Parliament.
Nsamba, known for his outspoken criticism of the ruling party, has not commented publicly on Kakande’s admission.
The disclosure has ignited debate about the appropriateness of government officials influencing election outcomes, raising concerns over electoral impartiality in Uganda.
