Isaiah Mugarura Wins Victoria University Guild Presidency in Online Vote

In a move aimed at strengthening student leadership and participation in higher education governance, the Electoral Commission of Victoria University conducted a two-day online voting exercise to elect Guild Council leaders for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The digital election, held on the 17th and 18th, enabled students to cast their votes remotely, reflecting the institution’s continued emphasis on technology-driven systems.

According to a statement issued by the University Electoral Commission Chairperson, Atayo Habib, the exercise was conducted successfully, with a smooth voting process and results later confirmed by the university leadership.

In the closely contested race for Guild President, Mugarura Isaiah Ndebwoha emerged victorious after securing 2,980 votes, representing 55.78 percent of the 5,866 total votes cast. His win makes him the 9th Guild President of the university.

His main challenger, Munungu Marvin Kahuma, garnered 2,298 votes, accounting for 39.2 percent, while Luweru Ben Kazigo finished third with 588 votes, representing 10 percent of the ballots cast.

University officials congratulated the winner and commended all candidates for conducting a peaceful and competitive campaign.

“The election process was orderly and transparent. We commend all participants for upholding discipline and democratic values throughout the exercise,” the Electoral Commission said in its statement.

Students welcomed the outcome, expressing hope that the new leadership will prioritise issues affecting the student community.

“We expect the new Guild President to focus on student welfare, academic concerns, and unity rather than personal interests,” a student representative noted.

During his campaign, Mugarura Isaiah Ndebwoha urged students to entrust him with leadership, pledging to implement a manifesto centred on student engagement, improved communication, and enhanced academic support services.

With the election concluded, attention now shifts to the implementation of his agenda during the one-year term.

Victoria University has increasingly positioned itself as a technology-focused institution, particularly in advancing Artificial Intelligence and digital innovation. The adoption of online voting is viewed as part of broader efforts to equip students with practical exposure to modern systems while promoting transparent and inclusive governance.

University leaders say such initiatives not only strengthen democratic participation on campus but also prepare students with leadership and digital skills relevant to national and global development.
