Muslim leaders in Bugiri District have called on the faithful to observe the holy month of Ramadan with devotion, discipline, and renewed commitment to Islamic principles, describing it as one of the most important pillars of Islam.
The appeal was made during the official launch of Ramadan at Mariam Mosque in Bugiri Town, where hundreds of Muslims gathered for prayers and reflections to usher in the spiritually significant month.
Speaking at the event, Sheikh AbdulRahim Jafar Nsumba, the County Sheikh of Bugiri Municipality, emphasized the spiritual importance of fasting.
He urged believers to observe the fast faithfully, noting that Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink but also about spiritual purification, self-discipline, and strengthening one’s relationship with Allah.
Mubarak Wakayisuka, District Chairperson of Muslims under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (Bugiri District), echoed similar sentiments, encouraging Muslims to intensify acts of charity, prayer, and kindness throughout the month, reminding them that good deeds performed during Ramadan carry multiplied rewards.
The launch ceremony was also attended by the Member of Parliament–elect for Bugiri Municipality, John Francis Oketcho, who donated assorted items to support all 24 mosques in Bugiri Municipality during the fasting period.
Oketcho commended the Muslim community for their unity and urged them to use the sacred month to pray for peace and stability in the country, particularly following a politically tense period.
"We have just concluded a very tense political season, many hearts were broken due to losses of their candidates. Let us use this Ramadan to pray and forgive one another," he said.
Nayi Kawere, representing the Kyabazinga Kingdom, also attended the event and joined other leaders in encouraging harmony and collective responsibility during the holy month.
"Let’s support one another and provide necessities to the needy so that they too can enjoy this holy month," Kawere said.
The holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin on Wednesday, pending an official announcement from national Islamic leadership.
Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is a month dedicated to fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayer, charity, and community solidarity.
In Bugiri, leaders expressed optimism that the season would strengthen faith, promote unity, and inspire positive transformation within the community.
