A new UNESCO report indicates that 34% of the students in higher learning institutions and those in tertiary institutions in Uganda engage in highly risky sexual behaviors.
The report entitled, access to sexuality education and sexual reproductive health services for young people in higher and tertiary institutions of learning in Uganda indicates that, 34% of the students have 8 multiple partners in a period of 12 months.
The report further indicates that, 39% of the surveyed students reported having sex with other partners while still in their current relationships and this risk behavior is higher in the female students.
According to Dr. Azah Taibu, a researcher with UNESCO, while releasing the report in Kampala, 69% surveyed are sexually active, and 55% do not use condoms at their first sexual encounter.
She says, 5% do have sex with their personal doctors and 12% are paid to have sex.
She says although 99% of the students know that HIV exists but they do not fear it because they believe it can be treated as any other disease.
The report was carried out in six universities and two tertiary institutions in Uganda.
