The chairperson of the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation (UTOF), Rashid Ssekindi, has urged taxi drivers across the country to strictly use main routes while transporting students back to school.
Ssekindi said the directive is intended to enhance the safety and security of students during the school reopening period, noting that main roads are safer and more accessible in case of emergencies.
He also called on parents and guardians to personally escort their children to school, emphasising that parental presence plays a critical role in protecting students during travel.
“As transport operators, we have a responsibility to guarantee the safety of our passengers, especially students. Drivers should avoid shortcuts and stick to designated main routes,” Ssekindi said.
Addressing concerns over transport fares, the UTOF chairperson assured the public that taxi operators will not increase charges during the school reopening period.
He said fares will remain fair and within the agreed rates despite the expected surge in demand for transport services.
Ssekindi warned drivers against exploiting parents and students, adding that any operator found overcharging passengers would face disciplinary action from the association.
The call comes as thousands of students return to schools across the country following the start of a new school term.
