Former Common Man’s Party presidential candidate, Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, popularly known as ‘Mugati gwa Butter,’ has questioned the decision by National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine to remain in hiding following the January 15, 2026, general elections.

Speaking during Sanyuka One on One on Tuesday, the former Kawempe South Member of Parliament said there was no justification for Kyagulanyi to conceal his whereabouts, arguing that as a political leader he has the right to move freely like other former presidential candidates.

“There is no point in hiding. It’s only Kyagulanyi who is hiding, and people say he is okay and happy. But why are the other presidential candidates not hiding? Kyagulanyi has the right to go wherever he wants,” he said.

Munyagwa’s remarks come amid heightened political tension following the disputed presidential election, in which Kyagulanyi emerged as one of the main challengers to the incumbent government.

Since the January 15, 2026, general election, Kyagulanyi has openly rejected the results, labeling them as “fake” and accusing the Electoral Commission of manipulating the process.

He has also alleged that the Commission announced results without providing the mandatory Declaration of Results (DR) forms, although no substantial evidence has been offered to support these claims.

On January 16, 2026, Kyagulanyi reportedly left his Magere residence and went into hiding after his home was allegedly raided by military personnel. Since then, he has continued to communicate with his supporters through social media, maintaining that state security agencies are targeting him—an allegation the government has consistently denied.

Despite the controversy surrounding the election, Kyagulanyi has stated that he will not challenge the results in court, citing a lack of faith in the judiciary. Instead, he has called on his supporters to engage in peaceful protests, describing them as a show of solidarity against what he terms a stolen election.

Government officials have repeatedly dismissed claims of political persecution.

The Minister for Information and Communications Technology and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has reiterated that the state has no intention of arresting or harming the opposition leader.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also urged Kyagulanyi to stop his alleged "comedy" and return home to his family.

Responding to statements attributed to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which appeared to suggest a pursuit of Kyagulanyi, Baryomunsi clarified that the government’s position remains unchanged.

According to the minister, security deployments around Kyagulanyi’s Magere home are intended to prevent the residence from becoming a “hub for public disorder,” not to threaten or detain him.
