The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack that claimed at least 162 lives in Woro village, Kwara State, Nigeria.
In a statement released following the incident on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, Youssouf said he received news of the attack with “deep shock and profound sorrow,” describing it as a heinous act that targeted innocent civilians.
He denounced the assault in the strongest possible terms, calling it a grave violation of human rights and an unacceptable attack on peace and security.
The African Union reaffirmed its policy of zero tolerance for terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, emphasising that such acts undermine stability and development across the continent.
Youssouf extended his sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims, as well as to the people of Nigeria. He expressed the African Union’s full solidarity with the Government of Nigeria and the authorities in Kwara State as they respond to the tragedy.
The continental body reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen peace, security, and stability, stressing continued cooperation in combating terrorism and safeguarding civilian populations.
The attack in Woro adds to growing concerns over security in parts of Nigeria, with the African Union signaling sustained backing for national and regional counter-terrorism efforts.
