Leaders in Semuto Sub-county, Nakaseke District, have been called upon to end internal wrangles and embrace unity, with speakers warning that persistent infighting has significantly undermined development efforts in the area.

The call was made during celebrations marking the victory of Richard Mavuma, a National Resistance Movement (NRM) member, who won the LC5 councillor seat in what was described as a highly competitive election.

Speaking at the event, the NRM Chairperson for Semuto Sub-county, Muwanga Yoweri, said disunity among leaders had denied residents the benefits of effective leadership and development.

“We must stop the culture of fighting one another. Disunity among leaders is one of the main reasons development has failed to reach our people. Unity is the foundation of progress,” Muwanga said.

The event drew several local leaders, including area chairpersons, party mobilizers and residents who gathered to celebrate Mavuma’s victory.

Addressing supporters from his home in Semuto Sub-county, Richard Mavuma thanked voters for entrusting him with leadership and pledged to represent their interests diligently.

“I thank the people of Semuto for the confidence they have shown in me. I promise to work for you and to be a voice for your concerns,” Mavuma said.

He identified water shortages and poor road infrastructure in several villages as immediate priorities, noting that the challenges continued to affect livelihoods and access to essential services.

“Lack of clean water and the poor state of our roads affect our daily lives. These are issues I will begin working on immediately,” he added.

The Mayor of Semuto, Kizito Richard, cautioned residents against violent and confrontational politics, urging them to focus on dialogue and cooperation as the basis for sustainable development.

“Politics of violence only divide us. Let us choose dialogue and cooperation so that we can develop our town together,” the mayor said.

During the same event, leaders encouraged residents to continue supporting the NRM party, citing its role in service delivery and development initiatives within the district.

The celebrations concluded with the distribution of catering and cooking items, including saucepans and plates, to residents as a token of appreciation for their mobilisation efforts during the election period.
