Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Graduates to Uphold Discipline Beyond Academic Qualifications

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged graduates to value the academic qualifications they had earned, but emphasized that good conduct and discipline would be the true foundation of their success in the world of work.

He made the remarks on Friday whilst presiding over the graduation ceremony of 1,261 students have graduated from the Buganda Royal Institute, with 736 females and 525 malescompleting various vocational and professional programs.

Of the graduates, 637 attained Certificates, 420 were awarded Diplomas, while 204 students completed their training and were assessed by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB).

Mayiga advised the graduates to first seek experience by working under seasoned professionals before venturing into self-employment, noting that mentorship and practical exposure are critical for long-term success.

“The youth are the heart of Uganda, and the greatest wealth this country has is not oil or gold, but its young people. The development of any nation depends on skilled and disciplined youth. These skills are built through commitment, hard work, and the choices young people make,” he said.

Mayiga added that productive and skilled youth have the capacity to transform their own lives and contribute meaningfully to national development.

He congratulated the graduates for acquiring diverse skills that will enable them to be self-reliant.

The Minister for Social Services (Education, Health) and the Office of the Nnaabagereka in the Kingdom, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, called upon graduates—especially those who benefited from the Kabaka’s Education Fund—to give back by supporting fellow youth who lack the opportunity to access formal training.

She revealed that the Ministry has plans to reunite beneficiaries of the Kabaka’s programs to collectively contribute towards sustaining the Kabaka’s Education Fund.

The Chairperson of the Governing Council of Buganda Royal Institute, Dr. Kasozi Mulindwa, commended the Kabaka for his visionary leadership in establishing the institution. He encouraged the graduates to put into practice the skills they acquired, stressing that their success would enhance the reputation and legacy of the Institute.

The Principal of Buganda Royal Institute, Joseph Balikuddembe Ssenkusu, expressed gratitude to parents and development partners who have supported the Institute in its mission to equip people with practical skills. He also announced plans to construct a modern training complex, scheduled for completion by 2028, which will accommodate up to 500 students.

During the ceremony, 18 students graduated with first-class distinctions, with Babirye Angel and Ssekweyama Expedito emerging as the overall best performers. The two were recognized and awarded for their outstanding academic achievement.

The graduation ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including officials from the Kabaka’s Government, heads of Buganda Kingdom institutions, representatives from the Central Government, political leaders, education stakeholders, parents, students, and members of the public.
