The Gomba District Chairperson-elect, Abigaba George, has vowed not to allow employment at the district headquarters for non-residents of Gomba unless officially justified, saying the issue was one of the key motivations behind his decision to contest for the position.
Abigaba made the remarks while addressing journalists at his home in Kyamboobo, Kigezi Village, Gomba District.
He warned land grabbers against encroaching on land belonging to residents, saying his administration would not tolerate individuals who displace locals from their land.
“I will not allow anyone to come and play games with Gomba land by evicting or intimidating our people. Those who have recently grabbed land here should vacate immediately,” Abigaba said.
The chairperson-elect thanked residents for entrusting him with leadership and pledged to serve them diligently.
“I take this opportunity to thank all the people of Gomba for the overwhelming support and for electing me as your District Chairperson,” he said.
Abigaba said land grabbing remains one of the biggest obstacles to the district’s development, adding that within his first 90 days in office, his administration would prioritise the eviction of illegal land grabbers.
“Once I am sworn in, the fight against land grabbers will be my first priority. Anyone found to have illegally acquired land in Gomba must leave immediately,” he warned.
He also criticised previous district leaders for neglecting service delivery sectors such as education and health over the last 15 years.
“When you look at Gomba today, you still find pupils studying under trees. Many schools have dilapidated structures, some without iron sheets, yet leaders have never taken responsibility. This will change under my leadership,” Abigaba said.
He questioned the continued poor performance of schools in the district and pledged to personally lead inspection teams to identify challenges affecting education, whether related to teachers, parents or infrastructure gaps.
“We shall form an active school inspection committee that will move with me on the ground to establish the real causes of poor performance. The health sector will also receive special attention,” he added.
On health services, Abigaba said he plans to engage President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a resident of Gomba District, to push for the establishment of a hospital-level health facility.
“It is surprising that Gomba District does not have a hospital yet the President is our resident. As District Chairperson, the first time I meet him, whether he likes it or not, he must give us a hospital for the people of Gomba,” he said.
He further vowed to end corruption at the district, particularly the alleged sale of jobs where applicants are asked for bribes but never employed.
“The era of selling jobs at Gomba District is over. Anyone thinking of extorting money from poor people through employment deals should stop. I am a ‘Porojjo man’ and I will not allow exploitation of ordinary citizens,” Abigaba said.
On roads and other public services, Abigaba promised to hold responsible officers accountable to improve service delivery.
“The roads in Gomba, especially in rural areas, are in poor condition largely due to poor leadership and misuse of funds. Money has been coming but ends up in people’s pockets. I will engage President Museveni to secure an excavator so that we can fix what has failed and correct past mistakes,” he said.
Abigaba George was elected Gomba District Chairperson, replacing Geoffrey Kiviri, who served under the National Resistance Movement.
