The race for Speaker of Parliament continues to draw new contenders, with Aringa South County legislator Alione Odria declaring his intention to challenge incumbent Speaker Anita Annet Among ahead of the 12th Parliament.
Information reaching this publication indicates that Alione, an outspoken Member of Parliament often described as a critic of corruption within the House, has formally entered the contest to unseat Among, who has so far served one term as Speaker.
Alione played a key role in the censure of several parliamentary commissioners — Solomon Silwany of Bukooli Central, Esther Afoyochan of Zombo District, former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, and Rubanda District Woman MP Prossy Akampurira — over allegations surrounding the Shs1.7 billion service award payments.
He has pledged to champion transparent and corruption-free leadership in the 12th Parliament, positioning accountability as the cornerstone of his bid for the Speakership.
Often labelled an 'NRM rebel', Alione has promised to provide equal opportunities to all Members of Parliament regardless of party affiliation or political connections within government.
Among the commitments he has outlined are strict adherence to the rules and procedures of Parliament, respect for human rights, and observance of the rule of law without discrimination.
Another contender who has expressed interest in challenging Speaker Among is Lydia Wanyoto, the Woman Member of Parliament–elect for Mbale District.
Alione, a procurement specialist by training, was born on October 10, 1982. He studied at Mbuya Church of Uganda Primary School before joining Katikamu Secondary School in Wobulenzi.
He later attended Makerere University, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Makerere University Business School.
