The family of the late Rt. Raila Amolo Odinga has expressed gratitude to leaders in Kenya, across Africa, and beyond for the support extended to them following his passing.
In a message shared on X by Raila Odinga Junior, the family said the outpouring of solidarity and goodwill had helped them through what they described as a profoundly painful period.
Marking January 7, 2026—Raila Odinga’s birthday—the family thanked President William Samoei Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and the Government of Kenya for what they termed outstanding support and kindness during the mourning period. They also acknowledged the various funeral committees that coordinated what they described as a dignified send-off.
The Odinga family further extended special appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, crediting the Indian government for its assistance in facilitating the late Odinga’s swift return home.
They also recognized the presence and condolences of several former heads of state and international leaders, including former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina.
The family thanked county governments and assemblies across Kenya for their role in organizing the farewell, singling out Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Siaya Governor James Orengo. Appreciation was also extended to Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Muriu Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and members of Parliament for coordinating national-level engagements.
They also acknowledged the role of media houses for what they described as comprehensive coverage of Raila Odinga’s life and legacy, noting that the tributes reflected the impact he had on the nation and beyond.
Recognition was extended to the ODM Party fraternity and staff who worked closely with Raila Odinga throughout his political career and remained supportive during the period of mourning.
The family paid special tribute to the medical teams involved in his care, led by Dr. David Oluoch-Olunya, Dr. Martin Wanyoike, Dr. Eva Njenga, Dr. Robin Mogere, and Dr. Abdul Msaddi, as well as staff at Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala, India, and Nairobi Hospital, thanking them for their compassion and professionalism.
“We cherish all the messages of support, love, and kindness,” the family said, adding that it brought them comfort to know how deeply Raila Odinga touched the lives of many.
