Orthodox Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi has called on Ugandans to uphold peace, unity, and love as the country approaches forthcoming elections, urging citizens to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects God’s will and the true spirit of Christmas.

The Archbishop made the appeal during Christmas prayers held at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Namungoona, Kampala, which drew large numbers of Orthodox faithful from different parts of the city and beyond.

The solemn service, led by Archbishop Muzeeyi and assisted by Rev. Fr. Niclas Bayego Ssekamwa, was marked by the singing of resurrection hymns and a candle-lit procession inside the church, symbolising Christ as the light of the world.

In keeping with Orthodox tradition, the faithful first dedicated their souls to the Archbishop. One by one, worshippers approached him, held his hand, and received blessings as they made the sign of the cross.

In his Christmas message, Archbishop Muzeeyi explained that the day commemorates not only the birth of Jesus Christ but also marks a period of renewal and reflection as a new year begins.

He said his message was particularly focused on the forthcoming elections, urging believers and all Ugandans to prioritise peace throughout the political process.

Addressing the country’s political climate, the Archbishop’s message—later read by Rev. Fr. Bayego—cited scripture while reflecting on national issues, especially the responsibility of citizens in choosing leaders.

He encouraged Ugandans to use the election period as an opportunity to promote peace, love, and mutual respect in line with Christian values.

The Orthodox Head of the Laity, Elias Nsubuga, also addressed the congregation, echoing a message earlier delivered by the Kabaka of Buganda.

He called on Ugandans to remain united, respect one another despite differences, and ensure that elections are conducted peacefully.

Rev. Fr. Bayego urged Christians to celebrate Christmas responsibly and embrace positive behavioural change.

He further appealed to both government and citizens to love one another, stressing that unity and love are the guiding light that will steer the nation through all seasons.

The Christmas service concluded with prayers for peace, stability, and prosperity for Uganda as the country prepares for a new year and a crucial electoral period.
