The Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference and Bishop of Kiyinda–Mityana Diocese, the Rt Rev Anthony Zziwa, has expressed concern over growing attempts by certain groups to weaken the family and undermine the sanctity of marriage.
He spoke during a thanksgiving Mass celebrating the 60th wedding anniversary of Edward Kasekende and Elizabeth Namuli, parents of Father Steven Lusiba, at Butegaaya Village in Busujju County.
Bishop Zziwa warned that some ideologies promoted today contradict the sacred purpose of marriage as established by God.
“There is a group of people working hard to discredit and destroy the holiness of marriage,” Bishop Zziwa said.
“They oppose every effort made to preserve its sacredness. We must resist such influences and protect the values that define our families and faith.”
The ceremony attracted hundreds of Christians, cultural leaders, and government officials. Bishop Zziwa described the couple’s enduring love as “a shining example for all married couples and society at large.”
“Edward and Elizabeth’s 60 years together testify to the power of faith, patience, and true love,” he said.
“Their marriage stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us that holy matrimony is not just a union of two people, but a covenant with God.”
The couple received a special apostolic blessing from Pope Francis, delivered through the Papal Nuncio to Uganda, recognizing their commitment to Christian marriage.
Government and Buganda Kingdom officials also attended the event. Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development Judith Nabakooba commended the couple and urged parents to document their family histories to guide future generations.
“We must write down our personal and family histories. It helps our children and grandchildren to remember where they come from and to learn from our experiences,” Nabakooba said.
Bishop Zziwa called on all believers to uphold the moral foundation of marriage and resist modern trends that threaten family unity.
