The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has inaugurated new members of the Uganda Media Council, marking a renewed era of professionalism, ethics, and accountability within the country’s media landscape. The ceremony, attended by government officials and media stakeholders, signified both continuity and reform for Uganda’s media governance.
In his inaugural address, the new Chairperson likened the moment to “pouring very good old wine into a new bottle,” symbolising fresh energy built on a strong foundation. He called on members to strengthen legal frameworks, secure resources, and protect journalists and creators from exploitation, while ensuring that media freedom thrives alongside responsibility.
The outgoing Secretary, David Kyetume Kasanga, officially handed over office, thanking the ministry for its support and encouraging the new leadership to advance professionalism in the industry.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Permanent Secretary Dr. Aminah Zawedde emphasised that the Council’s role extends beyond regulation — it safeguards both press freedom and national discourse. “Regulation is not about control,” she said. “It is about cultivating excellence and integrity.” She also urged the Council to collaborate with fact-checkers and civil society to combat misinformation.
Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT and National Guidance, commended the outgoing Council and urged the new team to uphold ethics in a rapidly expanding media sector with over 325 radio stations and 16 television stations.
Among the newly appointed members is Obadia Ismail, representing Electronic Media, following a recommendation by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). As Senior Legal Counsel on the NAB Executive, Obadia brings extensive expertise in media law and regulation.
“I see this not just as an appointment but as a commitment to strengthening professionalism and accountability in our media,” he said.
The new Council now begins its mandate to foster a media environment that is free, responsible, and anchored in integrity.
