The National Unity Platform (NUP) has endorsed lawyer George Musisi as its flag bearer for Kira Municipality, setting up what is expected to be a tight parliamentary contest against PFF stalwart Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.
Musisi secured the party card after defeating Jimmy Lukwago, popularly known as Kira Young, during the vetting process. Lukwago had previously carried the NUP flag in 2021 but lost to Ssemujju, who has maintained a stronghold on the constituency for over a decade.
The confirmation of Musisi was made public through the list of official flag bearers shared on NUP’s communication platforms.
A seasoned lawyer known for his legal defence of NUP and opposition figures, Musisi’s entry into elective politics adds a new dimension to the race in one of Uganda’s most politically active municipalities.
Party officials say Musisi represents “a blend of professional expertise and party loyalty” that NUP believes can tilt the balance against Ssemujju, who is also the FDC spokesperson and a dominant voice in Parliament.
Analysts predict a fierce contest. Ssemujju, who commands a loyal grassroots base and has built his profile as a strong critic of government, remains a formidable opponent.
But Musisi’s candidacy has injected fresh excitement among NUP supporters who see him as well-placed to capitalize on the party’s growing popularity in Wakiso District.
The developments also highlight NUP’s effort to consolidate its position in central Uganda, where it performed strongly in 2021 but fell short in high-profile races such as Kira Municipality.
With Musisi now confirmed, political attention will increasingly turn to how he navigates the challenges of unseating Ssemujju while uniting NUP’s base ahead of the 2026 polls.
