Bishop Zziwa Warns Corruption Is Trapping Uganda in Poverty

Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese has issued a strong rebuke against corruption, warning that the vice is eating away at Uganda’s future and perpetuating poverty.

Speaking during celebrations to mark the International Day of Justice and Human Rights at Kiyinda Cathedral, Bishop Zziwa said corruption undermines public services and deepens inequality.

“Every coin stolen from government services means a child without medicine, a student without a classroom, or a family without safe water. This is why corruption is not just theft—it is injustice,” he said.

The bishop stressed that corruption remains one of the biggest obstacles to Uganda’s development, noting that public funds earmarked for infrastructure, education, and health services are often diverted for personal gain.

“Uganda is rich in resources, but corruption keeps us poor,” he added. “We cannot talk about human rights and justice if leaders and citizens continue to normalize this vice.”

The event drew a large audience, including legal experts, politicians, clergy, and residents. Many echoed the bishop’s sentiments, insisting that tackling corruption cannot be left to government institutions alone.

“Many young people miss out on jobs because opportunities go through bribery. This makes it hard for us to build our country,” a youth leader from Mityana town said.

A retired teacher also called for stronger enforcement of the law: “We have good laws, but the problem is selective justice. Until the big fish are held accountable, corruption will not stop.”

Bishop Zziwa urged both leaders and ordinary citizens to view the fight against corruption as a moral responsibility. He said the Church would continue to promote values of justice, integrity, and accountability, particularly among the youth.

“Justice and fairness are values rooted in our faith. If we fail to nurture them, then no law will save us,” he emphasized.

The celebrations concluded with participants pledging to promote honesty in their families, workplaces, and communities as part of a collective stand against corruption.
