The government of Uganda has reiterated its dedication to promoting youth talents as a pathway to reducing unemployment and empowering young people nationwide.
Presidency Minister Milly Babalanda made the assurance while officiating at a sports tournament for vocational training institutes, held at Makerere Grounds in Kampala.
Babalanda encouraged young people to embrace sports alongside vocational training, noting that many Ugandans have achieved prominence through athletics and games.
“Sports is not just for leisure—it is a platform for talent development and a viable path to employment and recognition,” she said, urging youth to tap into every available opportunity.
The inter-institute tournament featured football and netball, with participants drawn from vocational institutions in Kawempe, Mulago, Nankulabye, Wandegeya, and other Kampala areas.
In football, Nankulabye Institute emerged overall champions after edging Mulago Institute 5–3 in a tense penalty shootout following a goalless draw in the final. As winners, Nankulabye took home the coveted trophy and a bull, while Mulago secured second place.
The competitions drew large crowds, including government officials, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Resident City Commissioners (RCCs), and other dignitaries who turned up to support the initiative.
Dr. Faith Katana Mirembe, the program’s coordinator, applauded President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his continued support toward vocational training and youth empowerment through sports.
“This program is transforming lives by giving young people not just skills for work, but also a platform to shine in sports,” she remarked.
Minister Babalanda officially handed over the trophy to the jubilant Nakulabye team, commending their resilience and teamwork throughout the tournament.
She reaffirmed that government will continue to back initiatives that integrate sports into youth development programs, positioning them for a brighter future.
