Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has dismissed claims of bribery in the ongoing debate over party cards, describing those who paid for them as “transactional people” unfit for leadership.
“For me, anyone who gave money to anyone to get a card—be it a scammer—and now says they didn’t get it, I’m glad they didn’t get it. Because those are transactional people who will get into office and be crooks,” Ssenyonyi said.
He was responding to allegations raised by Mayor Mutebi, who recently claimed that bribery influenced the process of accessing the party flag. Mutebi made the remarks when he was unveiled at his new political party after failing to secure endorsement from Ssenyonyi’s camp.
“With due respect to him, why did he not raise that issue when he was still with us?” Ssenyonyi asked.
The Opposition leader further urged those with evidence of malpractice to present it formally instead of merely posting on social media.
“When you just speak on social media, you are not helping the situation. Bring the information to our attention and at least hold us accountable for not taking action,” he added.
Ssenyonyi’s remarks highlight the growing tensions surrounding party flag allocation, a process that has triggered heated disputes among aspirants.
