Dei Biopharma's Dr. Magoola Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award in Canada

Dr. Matthias Magoola, a renowned Ugandan scientist, entrepreneur, and founder of Dei Biopharma Ltd., has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Sankofa Royale Award Gala and Festival, held last month at Unifor Local, 23 Regan Road.

The award was presented by the Canadian and African Women Aid Program (CAWAP), recognizing Dr. Magoola's outstanding contributions to science, health, and community development. In its nomination, CAWAP praised his "outstanding work and involvement in our diverse society."

A professional chemist and managing director of Dei Group International, Dr. Magoola has played a pivotal role in the development of a biological drugs and vaccines manufacturing facility in Matugga, Uganda—a landmark project that positions Uganda as a future hub for pharmaceutical innovation in Africa.

Dr. Magoola has filed over 100 patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, focusing on treatments for diseases such as cancer, HIV, and Alzheimer’s.

His work in pharmaceutical innovation has gained global recognition, including development of a novel anti-malarial drug, now patented in the U.S., and acclaimed as the most effective treatment of its kind to date.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Magoola developed an mRNA-based vaccine in the U.S., currently stored in a U.S. cell bank.

He also filed a patent for an mRNA-encoded version of Darbepoetin, a therapeutic protein used in the treatment of acute kidney failure and cancer, which has received feedback from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—paving the way for ongoing product development.

Another of his mRNA-based innovations, targeting neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, has prompted a Type B meeting filing with the FDA.

"Dr. Magoola’s work embodies the spirit of the Sankofa Royale Award," said Rev. Irine Ashu, PhD, founder and executive director of CAWAP. "His achievements are not only a testament to excellence but also serve as an inspiration to others across the globe."

Themed “The Power of Us: Celebrating the Past. Inspiring the Future,” this year’s gala celebrated individuals making lasting contributions to their communities and industries.

In recognition of his scientific excellence, Dr. Magoola was recently awarded the International Molecular Biologist Award and confirmed as a full member of Sigma Xi, the prestigious global research honor society whose past members include Albert Einstein and Linus Pauling.

He was also named by Silicon Valley Review as one of the "Top Pharmaceutical CEOs to Watch in 2025."

Dr. Magoola continues to lead Dei Group International, overseeing a diversified portfolio of companies, with ongoing efforts to transform Africa’s biomedical research and pharmaceutical manufacturing landscape.
