Efforts to promote gender equality in Uganda received a strong push this week during the Women 2025 National Dialogue, hosted by Faraja Africa Foundation in partnership with the Austrian Development Cooperation.
The forum brought together development partners, government institutions, civil society organisations, and diplomatic representatives to discuss strategies for ending harmful cultural norms against women and girls.
Speaking at the event, Justice Flavian Zeija emphasised that lasting change requires active participation from men and boys.
He highlighted the need for men to challenge harmful societal norms, lead by example, and champion a more equal society.
“Change requires men and boys to step forward as champions. They must challenge harmful norms, lead by example, and actively contribute to building a more equal society,” Dr. Zeija noted.
Dr. Michaela Kerschbaumer from the Austrian Development Cooperation outlined Austria’s interventions in Uganda, which focus on fast-tracking cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), expanding access to legal aid, and empowering women with knowledge, livelihoods, and networks, particularly in refugee settlements.
She highlighted the progress made, including improved conviction rates in SGBV matters, while acknowledging that entrenched cultural and social norms remain a significant barrier.
“Community-driven change is essential. We need more men as role models and advocates. Gender equality benefits everyone, by creating peaceful homes, better health outcomes, and stronger economies,” Dr. Kerschbaumer said.
The dialogue is part of a broader campaign aimed at promoting positive cultural practices that advance women’s rights across Uganda.
It also enjoys the support of female heads of diplomatic missions and UN agencies, underlining the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in tackling gender-based inequalities.
By focusing on both legal frameworks and societal transformation, organisers of the Women 2025 National Dialogue aim to create a more inclusive environment where women and girls can access justice and thrive.
