This development follows last month’s handover of land titles for 100 acres to the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.

The land, located in Nyantwe Cell, was donated by Dr. Henry Wamani, a former lecturer at Makerere University’s School of Public Health. The Kikuube District Local Government is executing the road works under a memorandum of understanding with the TMC.

Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa, chairperson of the TMC and Vice Chancellor, hailed the road project as a major milestone in establishing Bunyoro University.

“We are very happy to have reached this stage after President Yoweri Museveni presided over the groundbreaking ceremony in March,” he said. “We hope construction of the university buildings will begin before the end of this year.”

Prof. Grace Kyomuhendo Bantebya, the first vice chairperson of the TMC and Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academic affairs, encouraged the people of Bunyoro to prepare to seize the opportunities the university will bring.

“This is a public university open to all Ugandans, but I urge the people of Bunyoro to prepare their children to join and benefit from it,” she said. “Since it is a science-based university, we must raise performance standards in our secondary schools to feed it effectively.”

The Chairperson of Bunyoro Parliamentary Caucus, Jacob Karubanga, who is the Kibanda South MP in Kiryandongo District, said the start of road works demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its pledge to Bunyoro.

Kikuube District Chairperson, Peter Banura, commended the people of Buhimba for supporting the TMC and the local government in implementing preliminary activities for the university.

He said the institution would transform both Kikuube and the wider Bunyoro sub-region. “We have long requested for this university, and now efforts to establish it are in high gear,” he noted. “But it will be unfortunate if we fail to supply students and tap into the opportunities it will create.”

Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport are conducting soil tests in Nyantwe to assess its suitability for the university’s structures. The university’s master plan is in its final stages, and architectural designs for the buildings are underway.
